Seize the Grey!

How to defy aging - Stop, continue and start doing the following things:

A few weeks ago I had coffee with a good friend whom I had not seen for a while.  During our catching up on what's happening in our lives, unsurprisingly, the topic of growing old came up.

We're both over fifty, and as you very well know, a few things happen on a physical, emotional and mental level once you progress beyond this mystique age.  Certain things stop functioning, others  continue, maybe at a ever so slightly slower pace, and some things start to happen.

Stop, continue and start in themselves are not necessary good or bad.  That depends on the actual nature of each, but more importantly our own perspective of them.  And that is what we have control over. Aging and degenerating are inevitable life events, but we should not be victims of it.  Remember, we have the powerful gift of choice.   We can choose to make the best of it and to turn it into golden years.

Let's Live Life coaching is all about living life to the fullest and being the best version of yourself you can be.  Therefor I decided to write my blog about things one should consider stop doing, continue doing and start doing to defy aging.  Let's seize the grey instead.

So here are some of my stop, continue and start strategies to consider.

Stop:

  • Stop referring to yourself as "old" or "retired." Negative labels can limit your mindset and how others perceive you.   You are not in denial, you are simply redefining how you see yourself and how you want others to see you.
  • Comparing yourself to your younger self. You're not competing with who you were 20 years ago; you're evolving into someone new.  Embrace the new you.
  • Focusing on declining abilities. Rather than dwelling on what you can't do anymore, redirect your attention to discovering new abilities and interests.  Stop making apologies for what you can not do anymore.  Instead, own your journey without apology.
  • Hiding your beautiful grey head.  Not only will it safe you money and be less stressful on you hair, but it will communicate your confidence and comfort about being where you are in your life.
  • Excessive Sitting. Prolonged sitting can negatively impact your physical health

Continue:
  • Treasuring your relationships with your children and grand children.  Family is precious and being a gran a great privilege and responsibility.
  • Reaching out to dear friends.  In making special effort to keep contact you show that you value them,  it cements friendships and enhances overall well-being.
  • Involvement in your community and local church.  Social engagement sharpens social skills,  creates opportunities for meeting new people, and reinforcing a sense of purpose and significance.
  • Taking care of your appearance.  Non-verbal communication sends just as strong a message about your confidence and your vitality.

Start:
  • Being more active than you are today.  Try to include functional exercises into your routine to increase your mobility and range of movement for daily tasks.
  • Thinking about what you are thinking.  Take negative, toxic thoughts captive.  They not only illegally occupy mental capacity, but also hijack your emotions and feelings.  Intentionally renew your mind every day with healthy, positive thoughts.
  • Daily declarations of long life, health and prosperity over your life.  By saying it out loud, you use multiple senses making it a stronger neuro-linguistic exercise.
  • A gratitude journal.  You will be surprised how many things you can be grateful for once you consciously start thinking about it and noting them down.  Doing this promotes emotional resilience and a positive mindset.
  • Visualizing yourself as healthy, mobile, active and happy.  Remember the brain can not distinguish between reality and visualization.  It's a powerful tool to reprogram your brain and creating new perspectives.
